Autumn Garden Ideas for a Stylish Halloween Garden

Simple, cosy ways to add seasonal magic
Autumn has arrived with its crisp mornings, glowing foliage and that unmistakable shift toward cosy evenings. If you’re looking for autumn garden ideas that feel stylish rather than spooky, Halloween is the perfect moment to bring a little seasonal magic into your outdoor space. Whether you love rich autumn colour, moody contrasts or natural textures, a few thoughtful planting choices can transform your garden beautifully — without needing to be wildly creative or spend hours faffing.
Here are some simple, achievable ideas to celebrate the best of the season.
Seasonal Plants That Shine in October

Chrysanthemums (Mums) These autumn classics come in warm shades of amber, rust, orange and deep purple. They’re brilliant in pots and keep flowering well into November, making them perfect for Halloween displays.
Heuchera A semi‑evergreen perennial with gorgeous foliage in copper, plum or caramel tones. Heucheras add instant depth and richness to containers and can be planted into borders afterwards.
Physalis (Chinese Lanterns) Their bright orange lanterns are perfect for Halloween styling. They dry beautifully, so you can use them in wreaths or table decorations long after the season ends.
Calluna (Heather) Heather’s purple and pink tones pair perfectly with pumpkins and gourds. It flowers from late summer into winter and adds height and structure to displays.
Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ (Black Grass) This dramatic black foliage makes orange pumpkins pop and gives displays a moody, gothic twist.
Ornamental Kale A brilliant addition for autumn containers. Their ruffled leaves and purple centres look almost floral and thrive in cooler weather.
You can arrange any of these plants in baskets or crates, mixing in gourds, pumpkins, twigs, branches and berries. Add fairy lights for a little sparkle once the evenings draw in.

Sempervivums in Pumpkins or Gourds
A beautifully crafted look with almost no effort
If you want a Halloween decoration that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple, try planting sempervivums (houseleeks) inside small pumpkins or gourds. Their sculptural shapes look incredible against autumn colours.
How to make one:
- Choose a small, firm pumpkin or gourd with a flat base.
- Slice off a shallow lid and scoop out a little of the flesh to create a bowl shape.
- Add a moisture barrier such as dry moss or hessian to protect the roots.
- Nestle the sempervivum into the cavity so it sits snugly.
They last around 7–10 days depending on temperature — keep them cool for best results. When the pumpkin starts to soften, simply lift the sempervivum out and plant it in a pot so nothing goes to waste.
These make gorgeous centrepieces for garden tables, windowsills or autumn gatherings.

A Quick Note on Wildlife
It’s tempting to leave carved pumpkins out for wildlife after Halloween, but Forestry England now advises against it. Pumpkins aren’t part of a natural woodland diet and can make some animals poorly. They also attract rodents, which can spread disease.
The best option is to pop any pumpkins into your compost heap where they’ll break down safely — and your garden will benefit from the nutrients later.
Celebrate the Season
Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year in the garden. With a few well‑chosen plants, some natural textures and a sprinkle of creativity, you can create displays that feel warm, welcoming and wonderfully seasonal.
Enjoy the changing colours, embrace the cosy charm of October, and have fun adding a little Halloween magic to your outdoor space.
